So I credit Jayne for bringing it to my attention, but I never based how I was using my Dominate skill on anything other than I’d have to do it when they were very low on focus, I’d be rolling guile + skill to hit their sanity, dRanks + div for magnitude of effect with knowledge and other mental fortitudes acting as mitigations on the defenders side.

@samadhi Not really working towards domineering so much as join the mind club since my char got more acquainted with other societies.

My man @samadhi I see this functioning as being able to dominate a person per rank for a day per rank. I imagine there is a cost to dominate higher hit die / level / metric of power in certain ways. A simple example being instead of two lower rated psyches at rank two one higher rated psyche with the same constraints around duration = to ranks in days.

Not attached in any way to any of this, just wanna come in with defined skills.

" Not really working towards domineering so much as join the mind club since my char got more acquainted with other societies."
- pls translate

"dominate a person per rank for a day per rank."
- No.  It's based on their Focus.  If you keep them at negative-max-focus or lower, they stay dominated.  If their Focus recovers naturally or heals back above this threshold, they break free.

"I imagine there is a cost to dominate higher hit die / level / metric of power in certain ways."
- The cost is just in the difficulty of tanking their Focus down far enough to take control

I originally talked about this skill tree as a botnet such that each person added  would increase the abilities should I have the ranks to support it. The primary distinction being that I was dominating them.

This is in reference to conversation we'd had that I got inspiration from the idea  my character has taken to a radically different view of how to use his powers since being exposed to new ideas at college. I want a skill set that empowers each person who willingly joins the 'network'.

In the absence of a better description  I think I'm  just defining  a hivemind.

I'm pondering skills like adding to each persons sanity for each connected member, but the premise being each person adds 1 to the benefit defined through skills, with the base skill defining the amount of people that can be integrated and the limit to the ranks any derived/dependent skill can be raised to.

I think it looks like a primary root skill of # of people that can be impacted, then other skills that outline their magnitude. So for this conversation lets call the base skill hivemind cause I dont want to be distracted rn with a more appropriate name. That defines how many people can join, which I am thinking id have to be included in the number such that rank 1 is me ( no benefit....unless Im overlooking something according to the setting )rank 2 is me and lets just say a roommate but there's no benefit unless I had a skill like bolster sanity that would up the sanity of ( again reached for this vernacular for ease of reference, offer something different if there's an obviously better  suited  turn of phrase )  the connected members, but only to that skills rank. So here bolster sanity would only ever potentially offer up to 2 points of sanity since the hivemind skill is at 2.

Assuming what I offered to this point is still valid here are some questions I  have/ As I'm thinking through this while acknowledging  your ruling of gotta keep em addled ( focus damaged ) to keep em dominated, I have a few assumptions I'd like checked.

1. Presuming a new skill root apart from dominate to one  that the target is  willing to accept  Do I need a skill to allow multiple skills to effect the hivemind? For example, if I want to bolster sanity AND add DR to focus dmg do I need a skill at rank two to have two effects? Or is that already OP?

2. If it is totally by the targets choice does it change anything about what I have related to this question in the post?

3. Could any dominated individual execute tasks requiring detailed knowledge or skill?  It would suggest that there's little benefit to dominating someone to have them exercise those skills if they couldn't access them because they were dominated. For example brain dead cartographers probably wouldn't efficiently reference indexes, if at all. Spell casters might not be able to make magics depending on how they access them.

- This is a great question, and the nuance of your examples says that you are on the right path.  This is also the inherent danger of just forcing someone into -999 Focus, total loss of function and possible permanent disability.
On the every-day side however, we will try to assume everything is working fine in standard usage scenarios.  You blank out a cartographer, he cartographers for you, and the game keeps on moving.  Long-term captives are much more likely to exhibit deficiencies and permanent issues than short term rentals.

Want to take two ranks in the psychic version of the skill knowledge local. I think it'd be a d20+ranks+guile?

Would I add my psi-bab ranks to this  here since it's not an offensive ability?

I was looking at the dead zone for my pet rock's skill ranks and wanted to revisit receiving a benefit based on the type I selected ( meticulous ). I'm thinking every odd or  even rank ( not sure how that'd come up as benefeicial being one or the other but wanted to leave that open for you) a +1 to the listed benefited skill which for my choice of personality is + to search checks.

Should you approve any benefit in this way, Im wondering if that benefit would apply to things like searching someone's memories as well?

Psychic Paper!

https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/Psychic_paper

I thought the limitations and foibles offered in this article are fantastic things to consider during development  or directly implement as a part of the skill.

One question would be  does this  skill mean I have to create/find/contract someone to make some special mcguffin to do what it does?

Should you decide that's appropriate I think a fair shake would be a level of  investment in money or time similar to scribing scrolls, or  copying spells into a spellbook. Maybe even requiring  upkeep that must be done as a function of the ranks in the skill where a higher rank lets me go longer without needing to mind it.

Can I pick up Read object per rifts?

Also known as Psychometry, this uncanny ability enables the psychic

sensitive to receive impressions and images from an object regarding

its use, history and last owner. This is done by holding the object

and concentrating on a specific line of thought or opening up to general

impressions (the latter is always more vague and random). Just as a

psychic must open himself to sense evil or magic, he must open himself

to the object. If successful, he will receive impressions and/or images

revealing bits of information.

Impressions include: General alignment of its last owner (good,

selfish, evil), general emotional state of mind (angry, happy, sad, hate

filled, confused, etc.), the object's general purpose (what it is used for),

whether or not the last owner is living or dead, and whether the item

has been used with/by magic or supernatural forces. Object Read will

also conclusively indicate whether the item is currently enchanted or

contains a supernatural force/entity (as well as its alignment and emotions).

If the item is possessed, an Object Read makes the reader totally

vulnerable to psychic attack (no bonuses to save).

Images: The psychic can also see images of isolated events which

have happened in the past. This will provide brief snippets of images

and events that will offer glances of the previous owner and others

close to him. Traumatic and emotion filled events/images are the easiest

to see. Impressions will accompany the images, adding to the story

as it unfolds. Information includes: approximate age, height, weight,

build, race, sex, sometimes occupation, hair color and length; special

facial or body features such as a scar or tattoo or beard (very often the

exact facial features are out of focus, blurred or obscured); the object's

use/purpose; and some special event, usually very traumatic, important

or happy. Often the event image will be fragmented as if it was a piece

of movie film edited by a crazy man. The event will always be one in

which the object was involved in some way.

The success or failure of an Object Read: Roll percentile dice

once for impressions and once for images. The roll must fall under the

character' s base skill ability to succeed. A roll higher than the base skill

means a failure and the psychic feels and/or sees nothing. Impressions

and images are two different things, so roll for each. The psychic may

1 74get no impressions, but see images or vice versa. The present can not

be seen unless the psychic was successful on at least one of the previous

read impressions or images rolls. Once an object has been read it

can not be read again by the same psychic, even if he did not see or feel

a thing. Of course, the psychic can attempt to Object Read other items,

but each attempt will cost 6 I. S.P.

The present can also be glimpsed, but costs an additional 4 I.S.P.,

with no guarantee of success. Sometimes the psychic can focus in to

see and feel the last owner as he or she is at that very moment. This

will provide an idea of what is his current state of mind/emotion, appearance,

dress, general location (that is to say, a bedroom, office,

street, outdoors, etc.; no address or sense of close or far is provided),

general features (shaved his beard, dyed hair, etc.) and so on. The psychic

may be able to identify a place or person by feature if he has seen

it before or runs into him in the near future.

I doubt we'd carry the percentiles over for resolution.

roll = Ranks + Guile ?

Suggest would be similar to Dominate, same mechanics just a variant in its operation.   The subject would act more normal than Dominate, but they would only do reasonable things and are not subject to additional commands without another Sug/Dom

Proper DND Charm is so soft its best treated as just a standard debuff.
However, videogame Charm often operates as just a super-short-duration Dominate.  This version will take extremely short duration orders on any successful Focus dmg.

1) You never "add" your PSIBAB.  You REPLACE psychic attacks with PSIBAB instead of any Ranks of the individual psi-attack being used.

2) Nope this isn't offensive so no replacement here.  Guile will also be rare, this will typically be all Intuition

Some of the minutiae of that link's specifics would only be appropriate to an actual magic item, as that was, rather than what you are doing here.  So note the discontinuity.

One question would be  does this  skill mean I have to create/find/contract someone to make some special mcguffin to do what it does?
- No, because we aren't treating this like a magic item.

The version we discussed IRL was way more basic and specific.  You're just projecting an image in their mind.  Period.  Maybe with some telepathy first to see what you would want to project.

If you want to pursue the magic item version, it's too late for background equipment.  You will need to pursue the item in game.

Object Read is another super standard psi-sensitive.  The mechanics won't be nearly that specific, although the "zoomed in on ____ or super broad" option of narrowing your read is still acceptable.

Intuition will again be the most common application.  You are sensing something, not being clever.

I’d like to pick up the following powers ala rifts:
Psychic Diagnosis

Deaden Pain

Psychic Purification

Suppress Fear

Psychic Surgery

I can include all their descriptions here if easier but wasn’t sure if it would only add noise/confusiuon.

I am going to up my knowledge psionics to 3 from 1 regardless of your inputs here and wanted to add it while I had the time.

were you picturing this as more limited only for self-sanity checks (times of "roll under your own sanity")?  if so then the "offend sensibilities" clause could be dropped in favor of that being the more limited application criteria.

I realized I never followed up here. I saw this for instances where I had to roll under my own sanity, not for when I was being targeted with a skill that uses my sanity as the defending value.

Wanted to confirm that the final 'how it works' is the above line.

skill name  -  starting value » new value - how to roll for it - whether it targets a DC or someone's derived characteristic.

not expecting you to list Dcs but lmk if I am targeting a DC or sanity for example

Covered with last questions here
psi.diagnosis 0»1   -   INT+R+d20 - targeting ?
psi.surgery 0»1.     -  INT+R+d20 - targeting?
psi.purification 0»1  - GUI+R+d20 - targeting?
suppress fear 0 » 1 - GUI+R+d20 - targeting someone's sanity yeah?

discussed IRL in session / otherplaces
read by touch 0 » 1 - INT+R+d20 - dc based on?

Would a skill allowing the ability to write by touch be alright with you? I suppose that begs the question what's left on the paper? Standard ink I'd assume unless there is something that makes more sense for the setting or theme.

Corrected:

Covered with last questions here
psi.diagnosis 0»1   -   INT+R+d20 - targeting the complexity of the problem
psi.surgery 0»1.     -  KNOW+R+d20 - targeting the complexity of the problem (unless you are just trying to have a fancy-named Cure spell)
psi.purification 0»1  - GUI+R+d20 - targeting Sanity
suppress fear 0 » 1 - GUI+R+d20 - targeting someone's sanity

discussed IRL in session / otherplaces
read by touch 0 » 1 - INT+R+d20 - strength of results => quantity/speed

Would a skill allowing the ability to write by touch be alright with you? I suppose that begs the question what's left on the paper? Standard ink I'd assume unless there is something that makes more sense for the setting or theme.
- The wizards ways of doing this, despite being level 1 cantrip, are outside the bounds of Psionics.  Approximations: You could do this skill telekinetically if you had your own ink, or you could pyrokinetically burn/etch the paper, or maybe harden ectoplasm onto the page.

I''d like a skill based on this, how would it translate over?

Psychic Omni-Sight

Range: 500 foot ( 1 52 m) radius.

Duration: 5 minutes per level of experience.

I.S.P. : 1 5

An advanced form of extrasensory perception that allows the psychic

to have a sort of controlled out of body experience. The psychic

must spend one minute (four melee rounds) in meditation and enter into

a trance state. While entranced, his spirit or essence seems to rise 1 0-20

feet (3-6 m) above his physical body (this is not visible to anybody but

other psychic sensitives and those who can see the invisible, auras or

spirits).

From this vantage point, combined with heightened awareness, the

psychic sees through his mind's eye, without having to use his normal

vision or senses. Psychic Omni-Sight is incredible, enabling the psychic

to see in all directions at once, to see radiation, thermal patterns,

the invisible, and to literally see any movement, even of the wind! This

power enables the psychic to guard or survey a campsite for signs of

wayward group members or approaching dangers (maximum range 500

feetl l 52 m; this psionic vision is stopped/contained by walls and other

obstacles). It can also be used to survey an area for things that might

otherwise escape normal sight or take much longer to locate and identify.

Special Bonuses & Abilities:

• Pinpoints the locations of electrical outlets, electronic "bugs" (spy

and surveillance devices), electronic devices and other energy and

heat sources, as well as bionic body parts and cybernetic implants

close to the surface of the skin (not Bio-Systems or artificial internal

organs). Such concealed or obscured items can be identified by their

shape and heat pattern. Success Ratio: 40% +5% per level of experience.

• This ability can also help the psychic to locate secret compartments

and trap doors. Success Ratio: 25% +5% per level of experience.

• See the infrared and ultraviolet spectrums of light.

• See heat signatures: can tell if an engine has been recently used or a

weapon recently fired (within the last 1 5 minutes), follow recent

footprints or vapor trails (within the last five minutes), see heat signature

in darkness and so on.

• Hyper-sensitive to movement. The psychic can not be surprised by

movement or attacks within the 500 foot ( 1 52 m) radius or confines

of the area under psionic scrutiny (may be substantially smaller indoors;

closed off by walls and doors).

Lim itations: Although keenly aware and alert while using Psychic

Omni-Sight, the psychic cannot take physical action, not even to speak,

nor use most psionic powers unless he cancels/ends the ability. He can

awaken the instant the psi-ability ends and leap into action.

Ranks * 10' max distance you can travel from your body

"The psychic can not be surprised by..."
- this is a good example of my caveat earlier on the page for when translating from other materials.  absolutes are never translated; its always based upon your roll instead

@jelly

I believe  the reporting of my skills/attributes  got away from me.

As of the last week I dumped nary all my xp into paying back my flaws in its totality. So My sanity went from 11»14.

Dominate 2» 3

PSI-BAB 2»4 -  AFAIK this skill is used in lieu of the ranks of  the skill its modifying, For example, my Dominate skill is at 3, this PSI-BAB skill is at 4. When trying to hit someone with Dominate it would look like hitting their sanity using d20+PSI-BAB+Guile or d20+4+4.
